Best Nursery & Sleep Gear

Setting up a nursery is where the money adds up fast. Here's what earns a place in the room — and what the safe-sleep guidance actually requires.

A calm, softly lit nursery with a crib and glider

The nursery is where a baby budget quietly balloons — a crib here, a dresser there, a glider you didn't plan on. The good news is that most of it is straightforward once you know what actually needs to be safe, what needs to last, and what's optional comfort. Let's sort it out.

Where the baby sleeps: bassinet, then crib

Most families start with a bassinetbeside the bed for the first few months — it's smaller, portable, and keeps the newborn within arm's reach for night feeds. Babies move to a cribwhen they outgrow the bassinet's weight limit or start pushing up. A convertible cribis the smart long-term buy: it converts to a toddler bed and often a full-size bed, so one purchase covers years. If the room simply won't take a standard crib, a mini crib is still a real crib — it is built around a sleep area about 13 inches shorter, which is what makes it fit in an apartment or a shared bedroom. Whatever you choose, the sleep surface must be firm and flatwith a tightly fitted sheet and nothing else in it — no pillows, bumpers, or loose blankets. That's the settled safe-sleep guidance, and it's non-negotiable in everything we recommend. For sleepwear that safely replaces loose blankets, see our best swaddles and best sleep sacks; for a safe portable sleep space, our best pack 'n plays. The mattress itself must be firm and fit the crib snugly — our best crib mattresses guide explains the firm-and-snug rule.

The furniture that earns its place

A glider or rocking chair is the one nursery splurge most parents say was worth it — you will spend a lot of hours feeding and soothing in it, so comfort and a smooth, quiet glide matter more than looks. A dresser that doubles as a changing surface saves floor space and money; our best nursery dressers roundup covers the picks and how to anchor one safely — or a dedicated changing table if you have the room. A baby swing can buy you a free pair of hands in the early months, too. Beyond that, most nursery items are preference, not necessity.

What "GREENGUARD Gold" means

You'll see GREENGUARD Goldcertification on many of our crib and furniture picks. It means the product was independently tested for low chemical emissions — useful reassurance for furniture that lives in the room where your baby sleeps and breathes. We note it where the manufacturer publishes it, and we don't claim it where it isn't certified.

The furniture that decides the price

With cribs, price tracks build quality (solid wood versus composites), how many bed conversions it supports, and certification. With gliders, it tracks the seat comfort, whether it reclines or swivels, and the fabric. A $200 crib and a $500 crib can both be safe and GREENGUARD Gold — the pricier one usually just looks nicer and feels sturdier.
